Good ole George Allen

RICHMOND, Aug. 14 -- Virginia Sen. George Allen (R) apologized Monday for what his opponent's campaign said were demeaning and insensitive comments the senator made to a 20-year-old volunteer of Indian descent.

At a campaign rally in southwest Virginia on Friday, Allen repeatedly called a volunteer for Democrat James Webb "macaca." During the speech in Breaks, near the Kentucky border, Allen began by saying that he was "going to run this campaign on positive, constructive ideas" and then pointed at S.R. Sidarth in the crowd.

"This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great," Allen said, as his supporters began to laugh. After saying that Webb was raising money in California with a "bunch of Hollywood movie moguls," Allen said, "Let's give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." Allen then began talking about the "war on terror."

    Washington Post

For those who don't know what a "macaca" is a monkey found in northern Africa to Japan.

edit: my bad, i see it was directed at a volunteer who is of indian descent. oh well, if Va is a red state he'll get elected, if it's blue he won't. this won't change anything. no big deal.

What most of the media fails to mention on this situation is how this man is working for the Webb campaign and following Senator Allen on all of his campaign stops video taping and provoking the Senator as well as his supporters. Basically his duties were to provoke Allen into saying something stupid and he succeded. Pretty low campaign tactic from Jim Webb in my opinion. He had absolutely nothing on the Senator so he had to stoop to this level. If I were as desperate as Webb I probably do the same thing. Instead of losing by 200,000 votes, he may only lose by 150,000 or so now.

What the media also fails to mention is that this is a fairly common tactic. Politicians have their people follow their opponents so they can hear the speeches and know what is going on and what is being said. Basically his duties weren't to provoke, he was there to document the speech.

You gotta be kidding me Greencrest??? How exactly is video tapeing someone provoking? If so I'm waiting to see Norton all throttle Chubz. That's a common practice now, you video tape your opponent, and then your handlers/writers find anything they can exploit and do so.

The guy was there and filmed, I guess Allen must be low too because they have someone filming Webb.

Honestly, my guess is that Allen advisors had taken to calling the guy this in private, we all know how off color nicks can be used in private and Allen slipped or considered his audience and didn't really think of the possible ramifications.

I honestly dont think this will screw Allen but think of what the higher precentage of your population is in the Northern Virginia areas. Something like this can have a huge swing on the vote. It may not affect him in this race, but Allen was looking as a possible future Presidential candidate and little things like this can really screw a candidate later.

My wife, Dad and I were saying the same thing. What got into him? Dang he's pulled a slight Chuck Robb and damaged his presidential aspirations. I like the man, but he was wrong.

    Re: Good ole George Allen

He actually was provoking the Senator as well as the spectators. All the while Allen was talking, the gentleman was making rude and smarta$$ comments about the topics of discussion and about the Senator himself.

He was successful in the fact that it has made national news and made Allen look like an idiot but it will not help Webb in the least come November.

    Re: Good ole George Allen

It's amazing how all his comments aren't on the video, you know the one that shows Allen's comments and the one that you can hear the murmors of the crowd. Was this mental telepathy? Maybe sign language! If provoking someone is by someone being there, then lord lord we're all doomed. Look you like Allen, great. He messed up. Admitting a problem is the first step. Do I think it will cost him in this election? Probably not. He's rich, he's a name, he's as I read by some woman somewhere, very Alec Baldwin looking, so he's got a lot going for him. He's well liked so I think he's ok, unless he keeps sticking el foot in his mouth. For that matter, even if the guy was provoking him, he's senator, isn't he as we always heard about Clinton, supposed to be above it? Oh lots of guys cheat. He's the president he's supposed to be above it. Except when its Bush, and then he was talking in private, so it shouldn't count against him when he uses improper language. Ok so now this isn't in private and Allen is provoked. Well obviously there was plenty of good Republicans there who were filming too, I mean its cameras, I'm sure that plenty have them, so hopefully we'll have a few that got the soundbites of the guy provoking Allen and they can get out there to the press and posted online. After all, it was so loud that it bothered everybody, was loud enough for the Senator who was speaking to hear it, shouldn't be difficult at all to hear it on a tape.

Well considering it was this mans video that was sent in to the news, I highly doubt that you will hear any of his comments. Beleive it or not, my parents said their was not another video camera at the place because it was a very brief speech and just a very brief appearance by Allen all together. The reason he even pointed the guy out was because he was acting so strangely and looked so out of place that he actually had a few of the spectators a little scared of who he was and what he was doing.

What's with all the tude Rocket?? I thought you didnt care about politics?
